Joseph Antonio Cartagena (born August 19, 1970), better known by his stage name Fat Joe, is an American rapper. He began recording as a member of hip hop group Diggin’ in the Crates Crew (D.I.T.C.) in 1992 until pursuing a solo career with the release of his debut studio album, Represent (1993) the following year. Cartegena formed the hip hop group Terror Squad and its namesake record label in the late 1990s, through which he has signed fellow New York artists including Big Pun, Remy Ma, Tony Sunshine, and Cuban Link, as well as then-unknown producers DJ Khaled and Cool & Dre.
Represent was preceded by his debut single “Flow Joe”, which entered the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked atop the Hot Rap Songs chart.[2] The album was followed by Jealous One’s Envy (1995), Don Cartagena (1998), and Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.) (2001)—the latter received platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and yielded the hit single, “What’s Luv?” (featuring Ja Rule and Ashanti).[3][4] The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, while his 2004 single “Lean Back” (with Terror Squad) peaked atop the chart and remains his most commercially successful release. Cartagena has also released the top 40 singles “Make It Rain” (featuring Lil Wayne) in 2006, and “All the Way Up” (with Remy Ma featuring French Montana and Infared) a decade later. Cartagena has appeared in several films, including Scary Movie 3 and Happy Feet, as well as Spike Lee’s Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It. In 2018, he created and hosted the Coca Vision poscast on Tidal, where he discusses music, friendships, and pop culture with various celebrity guests.
Multi-platinum recording artist, actor and philanthropist, Chingy, ascended to the Billboard Hot 100 chart eight times and achieved rapid mainstream success with the release of his double-Platinum RIAA certified debut album, Jackpot and smash hits “Right Thurr,” “Holidae In,” “One Call Away” and many more. Off stage, Chingy’s acting chops include small screen roles in television comedy series “My Wife and Kids,” “One on One,” “George Lopez,” “Yo Momma,” as well as cameos in several films, including “Scary Movie 4” and “Speed Dating.” Chingy’s undeniable talent shines as he balances romantic rap/R&B collaborations with a rugged lyrical flow that highlights his experience as a former battle rapper. A St. Louis, Missouri native, Chingy began writing lyrics when he was 9-years-old and began performing soon after. Chingy’s 2003 summer debut single, “Right Thurr,” became a bonafide hit and shot to No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
Chingy’s debut LP, Jackpot, embodied his fresh energy thanks to his unique slang like “thurr” and “hurr,” as well as the dizzying synth-based melodies. Chingy quickly managed to build a global fanbase due to his accented, catchy hooks while men copied his style by rocking oversized colorful bandanas beneath their baseball caps. Women swooned over his handsome features and tried to perfect the popular ‘chicken head dance’ seen in the “Right Thurr” video. Jackpot was a commercial blockbuster, birthing three singles — “Right Thurr” (which later scored a fiery remix with Trina and Jermaine Dupri), “Holidae In” featuring Snoop Dogg and Ludacris and “One Call Away” — that all peaked in the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Todd Anthony Shaw (born April 28, 1966), better known by his stage name Too Short (stylized as Too $hort), is an American rapper. A pioneer of West Coast hip hop, Shaw was among the first acts to receive recognition in the genre during the late 1980s. His lyrics were often based on pimping and promiscuity, but also drug culture and street survival; exemplified respectively in his most popular singles “Blow the Whistle” and “The Ghetto.” He is one of few acts to have worked with both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. during the height of their respective careers.
Shaw began recording in 1983, cultivating a regional following with three independent projects tailored for his native Oakland. His fourth album, Born to Mack (1987) sold an estimated 50,000 units from Shaw’s car trunk, leading to a commercial re-issue by Jive Records the following year. His fifth album, Life Is… Too Short (1988) became his first entry on the Billboard 200 and received double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His sixth album, Short Dog’s In The House (1990) peaked at number 20 on the chart while marking his first and highest-charting Billboard Hot 100 entry as a lead artist with its single, “The Ghetto.” His following four albums—Shorty the Pimp (1992), Get in Where You Fit In (1993), Cocktails (1995), and Gettin’ It (Album Number Ten) (1996)—each peaked within the top ten of the Billboard 200 and received platinum certification by the RIAA.
Francisco Javier Bautista Jr. better known by his stage name Frankie J, is a Mexican-American singer and former member of the musical group Kumbia Kings.
Born in Mexico, he grew up in San Diego and became a freestyle artist under the stage name Frankie Boy in the late 1990s. He then joined Kumbia Kings before re-embarking on a solo career. Frankie J’s solo debut album, What’s a Man to Do, was released in 2003, followed by more English and Spanish language albums. He received a Grammy Award nomination for his album Faith, Hope y Amor in 2013 for Best Latin Pop Album.
Bautista’s first taste of the music business was in 1993, when he was briefly signed to Canadian independent record label Ventura International Records, featuring on a song called “Margarita” by Turkish artist Atilla. In 1997, Bautista signed with the now-defunct Hola Recordings which at the time had only one artist signed to the label, the brainchild of dance music legend and producer Jellybean Benitez. At the time, he was a freestyle artist known as Frankie Boy and his music was released on three Maximum Freestylecompilations but his solo CD was shelved before release.
Moses Barrett III, known by the stage name Petey Pablo, is an American rapper, singer and record producer from Greenville, North Carolina. He is best known for his 2003 crunk single “Freek-a-Leek,” which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and received platinum certification by the RIAA. Prior, he signed with Jive Records to release his 2001 single “Raise Up (featuring Timbaland), which served as a tribute to his native Greenville and peaked at number 25 on the chart. The label released his first two albums: Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry (2001) and Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry (2004); the former received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album while the latter peaked at number four on the Billboard 200.
Atlanta’s party rap duo Ying Yang Twins scored a hit with the single “Whistle While You Twurk,” which received nationwide airplay on urban and crossover radio stations. Their full-length debut album, Thug Walkin’, appeared later in 2000. Alley…Return of the Ying Yang Twins from 2002 sold well down South, but it was the duo’s 2003 team-up with Lil Jon — “the King of Crunk” — that brought them nationwide success. The party anthem “Salt Shaker” was a massive club and radio hit and soon had the TVT label chasing the duo to sign. They did, and their first album for the label, Me & My Brother, yielded two more crunk hits, “What’s Happnin!” and “Naggin’.” The same year the duo appeared on Britney Spears’ album In the Zone and her television special of the same name. In 2004, TVT released the remix-filled My Brother & Me with a bonus DVD of the group’s videos. USA (United State of Atlanta) appeared in the summer of 2005 as its single “Wait (The Whisper Song)” was dominating urban radio. Chemically Imbalanced followed in 2006.
Ronald Ray Bryant better known by his stage name Baby Bash (formerly Baby Beesh), is an American rapper from Vallejo, California. His first two albums, Savage Dreams (2001) and On Tha Cool (2002) were released independently throughDope House Records. After changing the last part of his stage name to “Bash,” he released the 2003 single “Suga Suga” (featuring Frankie J), which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and led to his signing of a recording contract from Universal Records. “Suga Suga” served as the lead single for his third album and major label debut, Tha Smokin’ Nephew (2003).
In 2005, he guest appeared on Frankie J’s single “Obsession (No Es Amor),” which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. His fourth album, Super Saucy (2005) was supported by the lead single “Baby, I’m Back” (featuring Akon). His fifth album, Cyclone (2007) was released through Arista Records; its lead single of the same name (featuring T-Pain) and follow-up, “What Is It” (featuring Sean Kingston), were met with moderate success on the Billboard Hot 100.
